Baby is coming soon? Do you have everything you need for their first three months? Here are our 15 essentials (or favorite products!) to add to your list, for shower or birth gifts or to help you plan your purchases.
It's crazy how much you can get carried away when shopping for baby supplies. Cute little outfits, tiny booties, dozens of stuffed animals and multiple blankets to match the decor of your future baby's room. But do we need all of that? Which products and accessories should we prioritize?
A cradle
We rushed to finish the baby's room, but let's face it, he won't spend many nights there during his first weeks of life. For many parents, it is often more reassuring to know that he is close by. That's why buying a crib or bassinet is a good choice, even if it will only be used for a few months. Here's a tip: a good quality crib will have a better resale value later on. Think about it!
A deckchair
Where to safely put your baby? In a bouncer or a bouncer. One of the favorite models is the Balance Soft (or the Bouncer Bliss) from BabyBjörn . From birth to 2 years, it rocks your baby gently, without batteries, with a simple movement of the hand. The child will then be able to rock by himself and even sit in it like in an armchair when he can walk.
A changing mat
Because diaper changes are repeated and part of the routine, day and night, it is necessary to have a safe changing mat positioned at the right height. We like the Matty by Leander , a modern mattress that is slightly inclined (for more comfort for baby!) and that does not require a cover. A simple cloth is enough to wash it. Ingenious and practical!
Lots of pajamas
Pajamas are certainly the most commonly worn item of clothing by babies. And with good reason! It is therefore important to have several and to choose them carefully. We like the footed pajamas made of soft organic cotton from the Quebec brand Petit Lem . The plus: the models with zippers make diaper changes easier… especially in the middle of the night!
Muslin blankets
Soft and light, the cotton or bamboo muslin blanket is a must-have for cuddling and reassuring baby. It also has multiple functions: it can be used to swaddle and serve as a nursing apron.
Plain, patterned or colorful, you'll find a wide selection of muslin blankets in store, like these from Little Unicorn .
A nursing pillow
This is another essential and versatile item. However, the nursing pillow is not only used for breastfeeding. Thus, the mother who prefers to give the bottle can be just as comfortable. This buckwheat hull pillow from Maovic will also serve as a body pillow for the pregnant woman and as a support for the baby who is learning to sit up.
A breast pump
New moms know it: the breast pump is a precious ally. Manual or electric , it depends on each person's lifestyle and how often you will use it. Our choice: the Haakaa starter set allows you to express milk, store it and feed your baby simply by changing accessories.
A baby carrier
Baby loves to be close to you, but you can't always hold him in your arms. The baby carrier turns out to be very useful. For a newborn baby, carry him facing you. You will find in store a selection of preformed, ergonomic and approved models , including the essential Embrace from Ergobaby.
Baby bottles
Even if you plan to breastfeed, it's always handy to have a bottle on hand. Which ones should you choose? For a newborn, opt for a model with a slow flow and a nipple that resembles the natural shape of the breast (if you're breastfeeding), such as those from Como Tomo .
Ultra-gentle hygiene products
Liniment, cream, soap and shampoo: hygiene products must be specially formulated for baby's ultra-sensitive skin. That's why we like those from local brands like Bébé Hibou , GOM.MEE and Lolo et moi which are formulated from natural ingredients (like olive oil) and which make new parents happy.
A sleeper
The sleeper is the perfect solution for a safe sleep. Exceeding international safety standards, it keeps baby's feet and hands warm while allowing him to move around a bit. A pioneer in this field, the Quebec company Perlimpinpin (pictured) offers different models in plush, bamboo or velvet, depending on the season.
Psst! Another alternative we love is the Love to Dream Swaddle.
Hats and mittens
Baby will stay warm with a knitted hat, adapted to his size, and small mittens that will prevent him from scratching his face. Discover our favorite models in store!
A first aid kit
Does baby have a little grooming kit? Add Green Sprouts Brush and Comb Set , Medela Lanolin Cream (to soothe chapped nipples) and Buncha Farmers Stain Remover Bar to our list of favorites.
Washcloths and bath towels
Both cute and practical, the muslin washcloths from the Canadian Loulou Lollipop collection are delicate for baby's skin, just like bath towels. Keep some on hand: near the bathtub, changing table, nursing chair, in the diaper bag, etc.
A baby bath
Baby likes to feel cocooned. That's why we prefer compact bathtubs like the Stokke FlexiBath , which folds up and can be easily transported to the grandparents' house or when traveling.
