6 tips for a “zero waste” lunch box - Charlotte and Charlie

6 astuces pour une boîte à lunch « zéro déchet » - Charlotte et Charlie

Use a proper lunch box.

Choosing a lunch box is based on several criteria: it must be light and compact, so that little ones can easily carry it, but also resistant and ergonomic.

As a mom of two, I would also add that it needs to be easy to wash. Especially when your son comes back from a day at the beach or hiking!

Of course, choose an attractive model that your child will like, and don't forget to label it properly (like all containers, by the way!).

We like: the So Young refrigerated lunch bag with its modern design (photo on the cover). Its removable interior makes cleaning easier. The best part: it can be worn as a shoulder bag or backpack.

Also worth mentioning is Herschel's Pop Quiz lunch box , which is durable and conveniently sized.

Avoid disposable dishes and cutlery.

Whether it's for a family picnic or the camp lunch box, opt for washable and reusable utensils and tableware.

Plus: Outdoor tableware, for the beach, picnic or patio table is more colorful than ever! Let the kids choose their favorite patterns; this might encourage them to empty the contents of their plate!

We love the Sugarbooger collection of containers and utensils !

Favor reusable containers.

We've said it again and again: no more Ziploc bags and single-use plastic wrap! For school, camp or even our own snacks, washable bags are now part of the daily habits of many families.

My pick: These Bumkins snack bags are made of waterproof and washable fabric. They are perfect for many uses: picnics, hiking, camping, biking, fishing, road trips and so much more!

Same for juice boxes (which are often too sweet!). Personally, I have been using Drink-in-the-Box for several years. They are durable, practical and, in addition, I can offer my children healthier drinks. I often make half and half juice and water. In the summer, I offer them water flavored with fruit and mint (which they will pick themselves in the vegetable garden). Is a sports activity planned? A chocolate milk helps to regain strength. The children love it!

Say yes to reusable water bottles!

Did you know that a million plastic bottles are purchased every minute around the world?* And almost as many are thrown away.

Admittedly, bottled water doesn't get a good rap these days, and with good reason.

That’s why reusable water bottles are gaining popularity. To encourage kids to drink more water on hot summer days, it needs to be within reach. The Nero Emma water bottle from Filo Import is fun and perfect for minis. It’s lightweight, easy to open and carry. Kids also love drinking from its silicone straw.

Embrace snack bags.

Puree pouches are so practical for satisfying baby's hunger, whether on the road or out and about. But they are also popular with older children. Children and teenagers love yogurts and fruit compotes: rather than buying individual sizes, buy large ones and fill the reusable pouches (or even better: ask your children to do it themselves!).

This is an eco-friendly and economical option. My favorites are the Squooshi pouches : they are easy to fill thanks to their wide opening and, above all, easy to rinse and wash. A must for daycare, camp or family outings.

The plus: the design of the pockets is so cool!

Swap the disposable towel for a washcloth.

Forget the paper towel or disposable wipe in the lunch box. Replace it with a damp washcloth placed in a container. It will not only be more environmentally friendly, but also very practical for quickly cleaning dirty hands before and after eating outdoors.

Stock up on these ultra-soft cotton terry cloths from Kushies , which have multiple uses.

Have a nice summer!
